FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  1. Why is there a vaccine requirement?
We are requiring vaccinations in order to protect our students, volunteers, educators, staff, and their families and communities. We believe that it is a matter of equity - the majority of students and families we work with come from systemically oppressed populations and encounter a lot of other obstacles. We’re doing what we can to minimize those obstacles. LAUSD district is also requiring that its employees, partners, and contractors be fully vaccinated.

  2. If I've done Live Scan for other organizations or purposes, can they use that?
    Unfortunately, no.
The Live Scan is organization specific and that information can never be shared. You will only need to do this once for YS and cleared of this requirement for the future.

  3. Do I have to get a COVID test before each session?
Weekly testing is no longer a requirement to be on school campus.

  4. Who do I tell if I’m experiencing COVID-like symptoms?
Please immediately notify your Head Mentor and Damaris Escobar, the Volunteer Support Specialist. Please do not go to your session if you are feeling ill. We will work together to determine the safest next steps for everyone involved. And, talk to a doctor!

  5. What do I do if I test positive for COVID?
Please notify your Head Mentor and Damaris Escobar immediately, as well as any other people you are in close contact with. The Head Mentor will notify the school. You will have to quarantine for at least 5 days without symptoms.

  6. When can I return on campus?
On Day 5, you take a COVID antigen test. If you test negative, you may return to campus. If you remain positive, please stay home for another 5 days. If you remain asymptomatic, we will assess with the school for you to return.

  7. One of my students has tested positive for COVID and isn’t able to come to school. What should I do?
Check in with your Head Mentor! There may be things for you to do to assist other students, depending on the situation.

  8. My entire class/school is quarantined and sessions will have to be postponed. What does this mean for the rest of my program schedule?
Your Head Mentor and Damaris Escobar will be in touch with the school about when it is safe to return to class. We’ll make sure that our students finish their stories and see them get brought to life! Program schedule will be adjusted, and we understand that it may affect your further participation.

  9. How often do I need to have a TB assessment done?
If you complete a TB assessment and are placed at a school to volunteer, you will be cleared for the next 4 years! We will remind you when you need to get another TB assessment.
